As lockdown enters week 8 (we think?) are you finding this enforced time together relaxing or tiring? According to recent You Gov figures, 87% of us think we are coping pretty well, although 25% felt it was putting a strain on their relationship. So, if you’re looking for new ways to find a little me-time away from it all, look no further.
Even though we are confined to a much smaller space than we are used to, it is possible to create a special place in the house or garden to just chill. Many of us have found time to add one hour of permitted exercise into our lives. Exercise reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones, and stimulates endorphins in the brain that act as natural painkillers and mood enhancers. Online sales of toiletries have increased, showing that with non-essential stores closed, many of us have rushed to order that special moisturiser, bubble bath or face pack. From getting DIY tasks done around the house to enjoying the challenge of painting by numbers, we seem to have been getting creative. With shopping centres managing socially distanced queues outside Wilko, high sales of children’s colouring pencils from The Works and local schoolchildren from Long Riding Primary School hitting the pavements with chalked and painted messages to celebrate keyworkers on the frontline, there is plenty of evidence that the nation’s artistic skills are on the rise. The perfect way to relax the brain after a busy day.

Sadly, most of the planned activities for this year’s VE Day 75th Anniversary have had to be postponed or cancelled due to COVID-19, but we’re not going to let that stop us celebrating this special bank holiday weekend at home.
We’ve pulled together a few ideas for local families to remember, learn and reflect on the incredible sacrifice, courage, and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through this dark and terrifying period.

Of course, we can’t go out into the street this year, but we can still create a smaller scale party at home. The English Heritage have created a useful Party Pack, complete with recipes for tasty 1940s dishes, a VE Day poster to display, invitations to send your family, lyrics to popular 1940s songs and tips for dancing the Lindy hop swing.

Local radios will be sharing memories and interviews in the run up to VE day, but you can set up your very own phone interview. Make someone’s day with a friendly chat about their own memories – we’ve put together a list of questions to help.

In place of public gatherings, the Pageantmaster is encouraging us all to join in a ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’ at 3pm on the 8th May. Easy to join in from the safety of our own homes, we are asked to stand up and raise a glass of refreshment of their choice and undertake the following ‘Toast’: “To those who gave so much, we thank you.”

There’s no denying that life has taken a different course for us all over the past few weeks and it’s been incredibly humbling to see such bravery amongst the NHS, Police, key workers and our own Baytree team. We’ve been thinking about the little ways we can help show our gratitude for all those who have been doing their bit to keep this country safe.
We’ve also been thinking about all the children who are stuck at home in lockdown, unable to see their friends…and of course all the parents who are having to juggle childcare, home-schooling and work, whilst keeping their sanity at the same time!!…
That’s why, we’ve put together these fun little colouring activities for everyone to download and say THANK YOU … not only will they keep little ones out of mischief for a while, but you can enter our competition for the chance to win one of five £25 vouchers to spend at The Works.
All you need to do is download your illustration, colour it in, display it in your window and take a picture. Then visit our Facebook page and you’ll see our colouring in competition post. Reply to this post with a photo of your picture and you could be in with a chance of winning. On Friday 15th May 2020 we’ll pick one best picture from each of the five types of illustrations and the lucky winners will get a £25 voucher.
What a fantastic, colourful way to thank all those people working so hard to look after us all!
